Tomorrow?

At work a couple of days ago, a client was talking about bringing in another musician Gabrielle to help. When Gabrielle arrived, I was returning from a toilet break, and I thought to myself “Hmmmm... she’s very tall” (actually she reminded me of a girl I knew years ago). So I got back and noticed that she had huge hands and a deep voice. In my personal experience, the best way to be comfortable with certain types of people is to meet them, which is how I’ve learned to be at ease with female ministers, gay men, lesbians, children and even teenagers over the years. Yes, when I was a lad, the church was discussing whether it was appropriate for women to preach. Readers over thirty may recall all the controversy when Matt kissed a guy (off-screen) in Melrose Place. And I was nearly thirty before I met lesbians who were interested in talking to me, which is a shame because we have very similar interests. And now my last digression for this paragraph — I fondly recall lunching in a park opposite a hospital with a lesbian hospital worker; she was pointing out all the cute girls in her department.

Anyway, back to Gabrielle — though I think I acted normally, she probably noticed my unease. I was wondering whether she was transvestite, transsexual, pre- or post-op — none of my business of course (unless she told me over a beer), but it kept my mind occupied. She’s very brave. It’s a lot easier to be gay than it was 10, 20 or 30 years ago, but I imagine Gabrielle would still be making a lot of people uneasy, and would have to get used to that. The best of luck to her.

Tonight I heard that an old university colleague has de-abbreviated her first name and “married God”, to effectively become a nun in (I think) the Church of Theosophy (I think that what what my source meant, unless there is a Church of Philosophy or Philosophical Church I’ve never heard of). Now that’s another brave decision to make!

Here’s an interesting entry I’ve been reading by .
